Abstract

In the first decades of the 20th century, New York becomes the image of modernity. Because of the crisis in national identity that Spain underwent, the city became an important topic in Spanish literature, as an option in the battle between tradition and modernity. Those were years of great social changes happened, especially for women. Taking as reference the description of New York that Luis Oteyza presents in his novel Anticípolis, we will analyze the female stereotypes that appear in the novel, and how the dispute between modernity and tradition are represented in the conflict between the main characters. The objective of this article is to investigate the processes of modernization in the status of women that underlie the conflict between the models of the "angel of the home" and that of the flapper.
